The World of Shogun

See how it all began in “The World of Shōgun”. Experience the history behind the rise of Warlords, Samurai, and a powerful new empire in Feudal Japan. FX’s Shōgun premieres 2.27 on Hulu.

Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

I worked on three shots towards the end of the samurai putting armor on. For these I did vellum sims, lighting, and cameras, as well as other small / minor tweaks, using Houdini & Redshift.

I also got to do some vellum work on an international version of the 3D billboard FX made to advertise Shogun. Below you can see a video of the billboard in Times Square. The international version I worked on was very similar, but required removing the sword and re-simming everything.
