Silverlake Shorts Interstitial

Silverlake Shorts is a free, monthly screening in Los Angeles that I’ve been attending for almost two years. It’s been a huge source of inspiration and a great way for me to find a community of likeminded creatives in a new city.

After getting a first draft of my character rig finished, I thought it would be fun to make a cool, Severance-inspired shot of my character at a computer, surrounded by hundreds of clones also working at computers. Around the time I was thinking of this idea, Jared Corwin, co-creator of Silverlake Shorts, asked me if I’d be interested in making a short interstitial / ident animation for Silverlake Shorts, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for my new animation idea.

This was made in Houdini with a combination of KineFX, Solaris, and Karma XPU. For the character animation, I used a combination of keyframes, VEX expressions, and procedural noise / secondary motion. This was an early iteration of my rig — it has since been updated to include a wide variety of face controls, better eye/eyelid target tracking, and much more.

This animation screens every month at Silverlake Shorts.
